    Valacyclovir vs acyclovir effectiveness

Valacyclovir (Valtrex, marketed by Glaxo Smith Kline) and acyclovir (Zovirax, marketed by Sanofi-Aventis) are used mainly for treatment of genital herpes. Both are antiviral drugs and can be taken orally to shorten herpes symptoms or to prevent this infection from recurring in healthy individuals. Acyclovir pills had been in use from 1991 and enjoying the status of a first-of-its-kind antiviral drug for genital herpes treatment, until Valtrex was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 4 years later in 1995. The valacyclovir vs acyclovir debate started since then and it still remains a matter of research interest as to which drug you can use to cope with herpes better. Valacyclovir advantages Valacyclovir has a number of key advantages over other similar antiviral medications. Clinical trials have shown that this drug has greater effectiveness in dealing with the herpes simplex virus (HSV) or the varicella zoster virus (VZV), compared to acyclovir or other drugs. Another plus factor of Valtrex is that it is probably the only medicine that can reduce the risk of herpes transmission, given that safe sex methods are used. Valacyclovir exhibits better oral absorption and higher, more prolonged serum concentrations than oral acyclovir. The efficacy of valacyclovir and acyclovir on genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) shedding was assessed in a double-blind, 3-period crossover trial. Sixty-nine immunocompetent participants with genital HSV-2 received oral valacyclovir, acyclovir, and matching placebo in random order for 7-week periods. Participants provided daily genital mucosal swabs for HSV detection by viral culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). HSV was detected at least once in 62 (90%) participants by culture and in 68 (98%) by PCR. During placebo, the total HSV shedding rate was 15.4% of days by culture (PCR, 40.2%); the subclinical shedding rate was 6.6% by culture (PCR, 27.1%). Both antivirals were associated with lower HSV shedding by culture (relative risk [RR], 0.03 [95% confidence interval , 0.01–0.07] for valacyclovir and RR, 0.05 [95% CI, 0.03–0.10] for acyclovir) and PCR (RR, 0.18 [95% CI, 0.12–0.26] for valacyclovir and RR, 0.20 [95% CI, 0.15–0.28] for acyclovir), compared with placebo.

Description Valtrex (Valacyclovir hcl), the valine ester of acyclovir, is an antiviral agent active against herpes viruses, varicella-zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus and to a lesser extent cytomegalovirus. Valtrex is used to treat genital herpes, orofacial herpes (cold sores), and herpes zoster (shingles). It is effective and safe for long-term suppression of recurrent genital herpes. Suppressive therapy is appropriate when outbreaks are frequent, severe, or emotionally disturbing. Valtrex is proven to reduce the risk of transmission of genital herpes. Valacyclovir suppresses shedding of HSV-2 on genital mucosal surfaces and may prevent sexual transmission of HSV. Valtrex effectiveness In herpes zoster, valacyclovir is more effective than acyclovir and equally effective as famciclovir in shortening the length and severity of shingles-associated pain and postherpetic neuralgia. Prompt treatment with valacyclovir can abort impending outbreak of both cold sores or genital herpes. 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest. There is no reason to worry that taking your vitamins and valacyclovir at the same time might interfer with the effectiveness of each other. Please do not worry about this as a possible cause of your recent recurrences. Is there any residual uncertainty due to my having taken valacyclovir (3 g/day for a week after the suspected outbreak; 1 g/day subsequently until now).

When the UNHCR evaluated some GBV programs in Tanzania in January of 2000, it discovered that the NGOs and UN agencies collecting GBV data in the area were all using different terminology as well as classifying and counting procedures. They found that “programme strategies and activities were guided by subjective impressions and not by analysis of data and evaluation of intended outcomes. None of the NGOs had a system for compiling data which was useful and effective for analyzing incident rates, types, risk factors, contributing/causative factors, survivor details, perpetrator details, or case outcomes. […] Monthly [Implementer Partner] reports to UNHCR contained inconsistent information and it was not possible to glean an understanding of problems and successes across a region [of Tanzania].” It soon became apparent that this was not only a problem in Tanzania, but in many locations. Over the course of the next five years, the UNHCR, RHRC and the Inter-Agency Standing Committee all produced documents in an attempt to improve GBV programming, monitoring and evaluation, and information management. While helpful, these documents failed to produce sustained results. In 20 WHO and UNFPA hosted a consultation and a symposium which called for a standardized system for GBV information management.
